The Summer School ‘Spaces of Projection’ is open for BA and MA students from all over the world, who are interested in broadening their knowledge in postcolonial literature, culture, linguistics and history and learning about the concept of ‘space’ in connection with this field.

The interdisciplinary approach of the Summer School aims at bringing together a diversity of people, so there is no restriction concerning the subject of your studies. But please be aware that all lectures, seminars and discussions will be held in English, in order for everyone to understand each other.

In the morning there will be three lectures by various scholars, each 45 minutes plus discussion, followed by a short round for questions and discussions. These lectures are for all participants, and will consider ‘space’ from various angles and academic fields, from literature to history, linguistics and geography.

In the afternoon there are a number of thematic seminars to choose from, which will be attended during the whole week. Students will apply in advance for a course of their choice.

One whole day will be spent in Basel, focussing on one continent: Africa. The lectures in the morning will be complemented by a round table of experts on African literature and history, and in the afternoon a guided tour through Basel will disclose the fascinating connection of this city with Africa.

The evening programme will be a combination of leisure and input: there will be a city tour in Bern, a reading, a film screening and a barbecue, as well as time to discover the cities of Basel and Bern.
